Raffles institution military band
We should, we must, we can, we will!
Raffles Institution Military Band (RIMB) was officially founded in 1964, and is one of the oldest school bands in Singapore. We were originally a marching band, but converted to a concert band in 1992, while keeping the name to honour our heritage.
"If I had to choose one aspect of my life in RI Y1-4 that shaped me the most, it would undoubtedly be my experience in RIMB. It has made me a better person in many ways, from developing myself as a musician, to honing my leadership skills and of course, forming countless lasting friendships that have constantly been my pillars of support.
I remember seeing the RIMB booth during my own Raffles Trail and not knowing what any of the instruments were, but the friendly seniors gave me a quick introduction and encouraged me to give RIMB a shot – so I did, along with a few of my friends – and before I knew it, 8 months later, I was on stage playing the euphonium at my first ever concert, Junior Bands in Concert.
That was when I realised that RIMB was so much more than a CCA: learning the euphonium had not only taught me musical skills, but also the importance of perseverance, as well as given me a group of friends whom I could rely on.
I then took on the position of Band Major, where I had the opportunity to plan various events like concerts and overseas exchanges with my EXCO, allowing me to grow as a leader as well.
All in all, I would say that if you have an interest in music and want to challenge yourself, definitely give RIMB a shot!"
